ORISHAS + BODY MOVEMENT
When: SUNDAY - JAN 27th
Where: BC Dance Studio (877 Hamilton St. Downtown)
Time: 12:00 to 3:00 pm
These are the dances dedicated to the deities of the Yoruba pantheon, an important component of a belief system popular in Cuba, characterized by the intertwining connection of music, dance and faith. The dance form is practiced by believers and non-believers, as the faith does not discriminate, and is very popular as it represents the epitome of beauty and complexity. Orishas dances are as diverse as diverse are their benefits. They provide us with a profound understanding of Afro-Cuban dancing. Also, they're empowering, allowing us to express sensuality, confidence and strength. In this workshop, we'll learn moves associated with the Orisha named Yemayá.
This is something that Cubans are known for: an island nation where people not only can dance, but also do it so beautifully that it's mesmerizing. Kati knows how to make the Cuban in you emerge. In this workshop, she will unlock the secrets to execute those shoulder, torso and pelvic movements you've been admiring for a while, but that no mirror-practising has yet helped in figuring out. This workshop is closely related to the previous one, in the sense that the moves you'll learn in the Orishas workshop will lay the foundation for the Body Movement class.
